Should I use ear drops or oil before my appointment?
When you telephone to book, Annabel may advise you to use an over-the-counter ear-wax softening oil for several days before your appointment. This can soften hard or dry wax and may make removal more comfortable and effective. Pre-treatment is commonly advised before microsuction where appropriate.
However, using oil does not mean that microsuction will automatically be carried out. Every appointment begins with a careful assessment of the ear canal and eardrum. Annabel will only proceed if wax is present, removal is appropriate and it is safe to do so. If another problem is suspected, she will explain her findings and advise on the most appropriate next step.
People with a known or suspected perforated eardrum, previous ear surgery, ear infection, discharge or significant ear pain should tell Annabel before using any product, so that individual advice can be given.
Will I need more than one treatment & will it cost more?
You may need more than one treatment to remove the wax; I will advise you at the time of your initial consultation if this is the case. The price I charge covers that consultation and removal of the wax related to that consultation only. I will explain and guide you through a consent form, which will outline the treatment and your agreement to it.
So for example, you have an initial consultation and I advise you that both of your ears have excess wax that needs removal however, it is hard and needs softening. I will advise you accordingly and make a follow up appointment. At the second appointment we are able to clear one ear but the other needs further softening over a few days, so I make a second follow up appointment and advise you to continue to soften the wax. At the next follow up appointment the wax is removed.
This would all be included in the price.
If you have a recurring ear wax issue i.e. it returns after being removed, these subsequent treatments would be chargeable at the normal rate.
How long does an appointment take?
This is very individual because it depends on your specific needs. I will advise you fully as part of the consultation.
Is it guaranteed to work?
No medical treatment can be guaranteed. I will only carry out micro-suction if, in my professional opinion, it is appropriate and indicated. In some cases, it may not be possible or advisable to remove all wax at one appointment. If this happens, I will explain the options and advise you clearly.
Does it come back?
Recurring ear wax build up is common, so you may choose to have future visits. Each one is a separate treatment and I will always undertake a full examination and diagnosis and ask you to complete a consent form each time. For example, people who wear in ear hearing aids do tend to have recurring wax build up so often need regular micro-suction treatment.
Is micro-suction painful?
Most people tolerate it well, but it can feel noisy, tickly or strange. I will always be guided by your levels of comfort and tolerance.

Can I have treatment if I have an ear infection or pain?
I will always assess your ears first. If treatment is not suitable, I may advise you to seek advice from your GP, pharmacist or another appropriate medical professional.
Can I book for an elderly parent or relative?
Yes. This is very common and I welcome appointments made on behalf of relatives.
What happens if there is no wax?
The consultation is designed to check whether ear wax removal is needed. If there is no ear wax to remove, you will only pay the £25 consultation fee. If appropriate, I will advise whether you should seek advice from another medical professional.
